Sustainability and Green Key
Committed to a collective vision towards more sustainability in hospitality.
Riga Islande Hotel has committed to decreasing its environmental footprint and increasing the sustainability of its services.
Green Key Certification
From the end of November 2024, we have been awarded the Green Key certification, which recognizes our status as a sustainable and environmentally friendly hotel.
This international eco-certification is granted to accommodations that take significant steps to reduce their environmental impact and promote sustainable tourism.
A glimpse of what we have achieved and implemented:
- Waste, including that generated by guests, is sorted and recycled.
- Motion sensor lighting is used in hallways.
- Employees actively participate in sustainability initiatives.
- We purchase and use only 100% green energy produced in Latvia.
- Since August 2023, solar panels installed on the building’s roofs have generated electricity, covering 10–20% of annual energy consumption.
- Daily cleaning products are eco-certified.
- Informational signs encouraging environmentally friendly activities are displayed throughout the hotel.
- Water taps in public restrooms have been replaced with sensor taps to reduce unnecessary water consumption.
- Showerheads and faucet aerators in guest rooms have been upgraded to minimize water wastage.
Annual goals will be set to ensure continuous improvement in sustainability efforts.
Do you want to help?
We encourage you to contribute to reducing our environmental impact by:

- Reducing the time you spend in the shower or bath and placing your towel on the floor only when it needs to be replaced.
- Turning off lights, electronics, and unplugging chargers when not in use.
- Choosing environmentally friendly transportation options such as public transport, electric cars, bicycles, or walking.

Solar panels
We have installed our first solar panels on the roof of our conference center to provide self sufficient and reliable green energy for consumption. We are proud to be one of the first hotels in Riga to do so.
Energy Conservation
Whether in central operations such as boilers, or with lighting systems, kitchen equipment, and automated energy management systems, hotel is working to reduce energy use while sustaining—and, whenever possible, enhancing—the guest experience. Hotel has a Green Energy certificate. The energy we buy, is the reused one.
Water Conservation
Within guest rooms, laundries, kitchens, relaxation zones, hotel continues to implement efficiencies that reduce water and, in many cases, chemicals that are used to treat water systems and clean facilities. Efforts range from the linen and towel reuse programs that are now an industry standard to the installation of low-flow faucets, showerheads, and other fixtures.
Recycling and Waste Reduction
In combination with recycling efforts such as paper, glass and organic, we look for opportunities to reduce the use of paper and other disposables.
Cleaning Products
Recognizing the importance of safer products for guests and employees as well as the environment, we are shifting to cleaning products that are made with bio-based oils and other natural cleaners. By making the switch, we are reducing the use of products with chlorine bleach and petrochemical derivatives. These more natural products have proven performance, are less irritating to guests and employees, and less destructive to the environment.
Green environment
Our staff workplace as well as the guest public areas, are supported by green vegetation throughout the hotel.
Electric car charging station
Our guests are welcome to charge their electric cars at our parking lot. There are two charging docks for usage.
